About this role

The Central Services team is located in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom and consists of more than 50 specialists who are responsible for the legal, reporting, accounting, tax, investor relations, technology, HR, responsible investment and marketing functions of Waterland. Role Summary The AI Engineer will operate as a horizontal AI specialist across all Central Services teams, identifying where artificial intelligence can meaningfully improve processes, tools, and ways of working. This role is both strategic and hands-on: from spotting opportunities and shaping use cases, to building, deploying, and maintaining real AI solutions that deliver measurable impact. You will work closely with internal stakeholders to translate business needs into robust, scalable AI-enabled systems. The responsibilities of the AI Engineer will include: AI Strategy & Use Case Identification Partner with Central Services teams (Finance, Legal, HR, Responsible Investment, etc.) to identify opportunities where AI can automate, enhance, or support existing processes and decision-making; Evaluate feasibility, impact, and risk of AI use cases, and help prioritize initiatives; Act as an internal advisor on AI capabilities, limitations, and best practices. Solution Design & Delivery Design, build, and deploy end-to-end AI solutions that solve real operational problems; Own full-stack AI projects, including: LLM-based applications (e.g. copilots, agents, automation tools); Backend services and APIs; Cloud infrastructure and deployments; Lightweight user interfaces where required; Ensure solutions are secure, maintainable, and aligned with internal IT, compliance, and data governance standards; Stakeholder Collaboration Work directly with Central Services stakeholders from day one to define scope, roadmap, and success criteria; Translate business requirements into technical solutions, and technical constraints into clear business trade-offs; Collaborate with internal IT, external vendors, and advisors where relevant. Continuous Improvement & Enablement Monitor performance and adoption of AI solutions and iterate based on user feedback; Contribute to internal AI standards, tooling, and reusable components; Support responsible AI usage, including documentation, transparency, and risk awareness. The AI Engineer will report to the Head of Technology (also based in Bussum). The role is highly varied and involves working in a supportive, dynamic team. Candidate profile We are seeking candidates (m/f/x) who can meet the following requirements: 5–8 years of experience as a software or AI engineer, ideally with exposure to startups or product-driven environments; Proven experience building and deploying AI-powered tools or products, such as: LLM applications, agents, copilots, or workflow automations Strong proficiency in Python Hands-on experience with several of the following: LLM APIs (e.g. OpenAI / GPTs, Claude, Gemini); AI coding tools (e.g. Cursor, Claude Code, or similar); Cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure); Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, and Git-based workflows. Experience working directly with internal clients, business users, or senior stakeholders. Strong ability to scope problems, define MVPs, and deliver pragmatic solutions. Comfortable operating in ambiguous environments and across multiple departments. Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English. If you are fluent in another European language, we would love to hear about it. Well-organised, self-starter, pro-active, detail-oriented, ability to multi-task and work to tight deadlines. Taking responsibility for tasks at hand.
